RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship (Online)
This online course offers a great introduction to navigation and safety awareness for new, inexperienced or rusty skippers and crew. It’s a highly informative course with lots of opportunities for you to put your new found knowledge into practice. Our online version of the course teaches beyond the formal syllabus and we are therefore happy to accept completion as proof of enough navigation knowledge to take a Day Skipper practical with us.
Course Content
Course topics include: Charts and Publications, basic navigation, safety, buoyage, tidal awareness and calculations, visual and electronic navigation, pilotage, rules of the road, anchoring, weather, passage planning, marine environment and rope work.
You will receive a course pack which includes charts, plotter, course handbook, exercises and an electronic chart plotter CD.

RYA Day Skipper Shorebased
A comprehensive introduction to cruising for new Skippers. This course equips you with enough knowledge to navigate around familiar waters by day. A basic knowledge of lights is also included to introduce you to night cruising.
The course classroom based and taught over 40 hours and concludes with two exam papers.
Course topics include the basics of seamanship, the essentials of coastal navigation and pilotage, chart work, electronic charts, position fixing, plotting a course to steer, weather forecasting and meteorology, tides, collision regulations,construction, parts and equipment of a cruising boat, emergency and safety procedures including distress calls, use of flares, safety harnesses, lifejackets and life rafts.

RYA Yachtmaster Shorebased
Advanced training for more experienced skippers building on the Day Skipper Shorebased course.This course equips you to navigate safely on coastal and offshore passages. It allows some time for revision of the basics and then moves on to advanced navigation techniques.
The course is classroom based and taught over 6 days and concludes with three exam papers.
Course topics include: Position fixing, course shaping and plotting, tidal knowledge, use of almanacs and admiralty publications, electronic position finding equipment, taking and interpreting forecasts, plotting weather systems, weather predictions using a barometer and by observation, collision regulations, customs and excise regulations for cruising abroad.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean Shorebased
This course unravels the mysteries of astro navigation, using a sextant, ocean passage making, worldwide meteorology and electronic navigation aids.
This course is for those aspiring to blue water cruising and is ideal for holders of the Yachtmaster Offshore certificate who are preparing for their first ocean passage.
Topics covered include: The earth and the celestial sphere, practical guide to use and care of sextant at sea, meridian altitudes, sun, star and other sights, Ocean passage planning. and meteorology.

RYA First Aid Shorebased
This course covers all the usual first aid subjects, but from a boating perspective. It is aimed at anyone who goes afloat, whether on inland waters, rivers, estuaries or on coastal passages. In a medical emergency first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support Skippers.
This course fulfils the requirements for: Professional Skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters and it is the Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to ISAF’s regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4).
The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE.
The subjects specific to boating include: The recovery position in a confined space, CPR, including the drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and/or exposure, seasickness and dehydration, medical assistance or advice by VHF and helicopter rescue.

RYA SRC (Short Range Radio) Online
A course for anyone who owns or uses a fixed or hand-held marine VHF radio. The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC). This includes both fixed and hand held equipment using International channels.
We provide this course in two parts: Firstly, an online study module which includes a pre-exam knowledge check. Secondly, a short face-to-face examination with our school’s SRC Assessor . They will require you to demonstrate making different emergency call types and complete a short test paper.
During the online part of the course, you will study: The basics of radio operation, the correct frequencies (channels) to be used, distress, urgency and medical assistance procedures, making ship to shore telephone calls, Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators, the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs), and Search and Rescue Transponders (SARTs).

RYA Sea Survival
A one-day course for anyone going to sea, providing an understanding of how to use the safety equipment aboard your boat. Cruising is one of the safest leisure sporting activities, and 99.9% of those afloat will never use their life raft. However, if you are part of the unlucky 0.1% your chances of survival will be greatly increased if you understand how to use the equipment and how to help yourself. It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more likely to survive.
This course includes a practical session in a swimming pool. Experience first hand the problems of entering an uncooperative life raft and assisting others while fully kitted out in wet weather gear and a lifejacket. Course topics include: Life rafts and the equipment they contain, survival techniques, the design of lifejackets, medical aspects of sea survival, search and rescue techniques
This course is a requirement for anyone wishing to add a Commercial Endorsement to their Yachtmaster Certificate of Competence.

RYA Radar Shorebased
A one-day course providing a better understanding of radar as an aid to navigation and collision avoidance. Cruising boats increasingly have radar on board. The International Regulations for the Prevention of Collisions at Sea state that if you have a radar, you must know how to use it.
Radar is probably the most versatile of all electronic navigation aids, but the best results are only obtained when you know how to use all the functions correctly. It is not an all seeing eye, and can easily mislead those who do not understand its controls, allow for its limitations, or correctly interpret its picture.
Course topics include: How the radar set works, how its adjustments and features affect the way it works, target definition, radar reflectors, types of radar display, radar plotting, the use of radar in navigation and collision avoidance.

RYA Diesel Engine
A one-day course providing an introduction to and explanation of the marine diesel engine. This is very much a 'hands-on' course. You will learn about the fuel, cooling and electrical systems of an engine. Fault finding, common problem fixing and regular maintence are also covered.
You will have access to a cutaway and fully working engine. Essential for those with their own boats.
